A good portrait isn’t taken – it’s given.
What happens between the lens and the person is never predictable, never static. These images are not about appearance, but presence. Moments of honesty, humour, tension or calm – whatever surfaced when the camera was simply allowed to be there.
Good photography is said to be painting with light. Think about that again and look at a portrait, because my opinion is that GREAT photography is definitely painting with shadows.
